3 Years

When my blue eyes gaze at your plump pink lips as they smile at me,

The whole world fades away with a rush of overwhelming happiness

Because I love You.

When the english teacher drones on and on and my head begins to pound,

My arms wrap around your inch high shoulders and the smell of safety eliminates the pain

Because I love You.

When I stare at the light of the phone screen as the clock ticks past 2 a.m,

I smile and laugh reading your words as if you are right beside me

Because I love You.

When I create PB and J sandwiches to subside the growling in our stomachs,

Cutting the crust away from the fluffy inside of the sourdough bread

Because I love You.

When I struggle to hold my eyelids up at midnight waiting for your shift to end,

To hear you write down every detail of your day and how your black uniform is covered in flour

Because I love You.

When sitting in my black velvet prom dress my ears process that you will be going to another prom with another girl, My feelings are written into the lines of my eyes but I do not stop you

Because I love You.

When I formulate the words in my mind as you write that we can’t fix this,

I cry in your arms as you come to collect your old Brooklyn sweatshirt

Because I love You.

When I find out that you cheated every word you said to me disappears as dust in the wind,

You are happily tied to some girl I had no idea was waiting in the shadows and I accept the idea into my brain that I don’t know who you are anymore and I let you go

Because I love Myself.
