And So

The boy three summers, a full lifetime, ago,

Would not let me leave,

Let me live,

Let me fly.

And so I was chained to him at the bottom of everything.

I could not save him, not even close.

And so I had to drown with him.

That love, clinging and desperate, was my anger,

Was my hatred,

Was my anchor.

And so I suffocated.

The colors of the eyes have no comparison to the hues of your soul,

To the subtle vibrancy of your skin against mine.

And so the whole of the ocean is but a single tear on your shirt

As I clutch it close to my heart and remember

You.

This love, quiet and soft, was my peace,

Was my light,

Was my home.

And so I miss you.

I refuse to be him, he who would not let go, he who was so cruel with his love.

And so, although I love you, I will loosen my grip.

I will let you leave,

Let you live,

Let you fly.

And so you will.

Change is the only certainty in this life.

And so I let you go.
