The Animal Inside
In the drafty basement
It calls to me.
My heart harmonizes with the faint beat
Of a throbbing drum,
And my spine shudders to the flapping of wings.
It’s coming.
Creeping up, It attacks
And plunges into a battle for the mind.
Clawing at the celestial veil that divides
The animal and me.
It splits.
Flashes of yellow blue and purple fade
To a dark constricting black.
The music comes to an unexpected stop,
And I wake from my daydream
To find myself no longer lounging in my basement
To now cradled by the gentle arms of the ocean
Slowly dragging me to the bottom.
