Beautiful Dream

When you are a child
You see those around you as equal.
For ignorance is bliss.
When you age,
You become callous,
Judgmental,
And ugly.
It may not be on the outside,
However the ugly is sure on the inside.
Years ago brave men and woman--
Braver than you or I--
Fought for the ugliness to die,
And in a way it did.
For the children that surround us who are unbiased--
To skin color, gender, sexual orientation, and ethnicity--
Will grow to be beautiful on the inside.
Martin Luther King Jr. had a dream,
And you and I see that dream coming true everyday.
But will we allow those who scheme,
And deviate to destroy the dream survive?
The answer is simple:
Yes.
For the world would put those who fought,
For the civil rights we now take for granted,
In disgrace.
Because the world cannot maintain that dream,
If we are all clouded with hate and criticism.
So it is up to you, I and everyone else,
To become optimists at heart,
To be leaders of equality,
To be the hope the world so desperately needs,
To be the progression that the world has slowed down,
And to be the continuance of a legacy that has saved us all--
From destruction.
Follow the good,
Follow the beautiful dream.
