Beyond Anything Else

Come and talk to me,
I promise I don't bite
I have a wonderful story to tell you
A story about the day that changed my life

Every day I sat on a bus
Rode home after work
Mindin' my own business
Never said a word to the white folk

Until one day
They wanted me to move
To act like I wasn't a paying customer on these bus routes
And I was a piece of trash to throw at the back

But my Momma taught me better,
Yes, she taught me to never back down
So I kept my behind down in the seat
And I refused to stand for that

And oh how they argued with me
Said I was out of place
Told me to move
Or they would call up the state

So I said "call em' up, I'm not movin' an inch"
And they handcuffed me and sent me to the clink
But while I was inside
I smiled to myself
Knowing that I had helped
Start a movement
Beyond anything else

I could just imagine
Blacks all over the place
Just stopped ridin' those buses
Walked, biked, and drove
But never took the buses

And still that night
When I was released
I didn't know what was coming
But I was smilin' to myself
Knowing that I had helped
Start a movement
Beyond anything else
