Breathe calmly

I breathe calmly,

Removing the false confidence I wear like my favorite pair of jeans,

Dip my toes in the icy waters you call life

And I breathe calmly.

I do not hesitate to call you when I feel I’ve gone cold,

When my existence becomes nothing to me, but remains everything to you.

I stay alive, now sitting in this frozen ocean.

As pain shoots through my legs and into my core,

I breathe calmly.

I hold your head above the water and give you the little warmth remaining in my body.

Dark skies roll overhead, but I remain, now fully submerged.

You pull me out.

The sunrays dance on my skin like sweet kisses.

Years later we sit hand in hand.

You ask why I did not let you drown

And I say that it wasn’t meant to end that way.

Confusion slides across your face so I ask something in return;

Why did you save me?

“Because I love you”, he breathes calmly.

We were not in love while in that frigid place,

But we have grown, as we did not let each other drown.

My dear, our love comes from stubbornness and trust.

We are souls made of sugar, fire, and hope.

Sweet, strong, and dedicated.
