Desolation

Bitter, Wretched, violent
Words flowing through my ears
Hate exposed through words and actions,
Kick. Spit. Shot.

Enough we have endured
Enough we have kept silent
sitting in the back
eating in the kitchen
no good education- because we are black

Hope. Light
Faith whispers in our ears
A voice so long ignored
Has most certainly endured

We will not sit in the back
Nor will we be shoved into separate kitchens
And forced to be less educated

Are we not the same as you?
Do we not both bleed red? Have a God?

So you see if desolation be my friend
He does keep me sweet, sweet company
And that voice of hope will no longer keep quiet
it will no longer be ignored.

For so long we have lived with desolation
That time has come to part ways
And head towards equality because,
yes indeed we do both bleed red
and have a god
and it is he who has told me to forgive
for all that solitude has given me hope
and hope given me strength
and strength the courage
and courage my freedom
and freedom my rights
rights same as yours
and forever more shall be the same

So goodbye desolation, you have been good company
but time has come for me to truly be free.
