During this time not too long ago,
Hatred swept and kept us low.
During this time of black and white,
People took a stand, people would fight.

During this time there was a King,
Not a bone in his body was considered mean.
During this time this King had a dream,
A dream that would play out in a later scheme.

During this time Rosa would refuse to stand,
For she was equal to the white man.
During this time people were hateful and cruel,
But little Ruby would step foot in a white school.

During this time people would die,
Because of prejudice, a judging eye.
During this time people were shot,
Pushed around, and hurt a lot.

During this time being sprayed by a hose,
Whites considered them not friends, but foes.
During this time the fight to be equal was real,
People would protest and say how they feel.

During this time this was no game,
Full of shame, no one looking for fame.
During this time passion burned,
Reaching out for a lesson to be learned.

During this time we saw the color of skin,
Not what mattered, not what was within.
During this time, a nation full of woe,
A time we were fortunate not to know.
