In history,
You read of my grandmother's pain.
Her torture,
The whippings
The pain of being pulled apart from her children
And
Her husband being brutally murdered while being forced to watch
All because of her dark-colored skin.
But now you've forgotten,
Why?

In movies,
You see what my mother went through.
The Depravity
The robbed education
Lost oppertunity
And
The Approved, Applauded brute force
Caused by the race--which she did not even chose.
But you remember only for a time.
Why?

In songs,
You hear of my pain.
My robbed innocence.
My silenced voice
My controlled life
Even now, just because I am black.
You sing along but do not hear the true message.

Listen to my voice!
I am a woman
I am a African American
But
I am more than that,
I am strong
I have endured
I am wise
I will live on, don't forget me!
