Freedom's Cage

    The man at the podium

The new leader of our free world

Looked at the crowd with his steely, gray eyes

    And a firm expression

    And proclaimed his promise

    To “Make America

    Great Again.”

I took a look at my country.

I studied the 50 states of freedom.

I watched as innocent people were shot in cold blood.

I saw young sons ripped from their families.

I stood as young citizens were cast from their homes

    For being themselves.

I felt the flames warm my face

As angry citizens set homes and businesses afire in protest.

I sat at crumbling desks in classrooms of students

    Who struggled day-to-day

    In and out of school.

I gasped as I watched drugs and violence

    Destroy communities one by one.

I watched as families were discriminated against

    For their religion,

    For their race,

    For their views,

    For their choices,

    For themselves.

    And as I looked back

At the man at the podium

The new leader of our free world

    Surrounded by a cheering crowd

    Of surefire supporters

Encased in a steel cage of freedom,

    The man at the podium

    With his steely gray eyes

    Promised me

    Promised his people

    That he,

    Would make America

    Great Once Again.

    And I hope

    That he

    Holds his promise

    To his people.
