a genuine heart

red

pink

red

pink

unrealistic expectations

paper hearts decorated

with white lace

one day a year

designated solely for romance

expensive presents, roses

chocolates, the complex gamut

I watch the exchange

she bought him a flannel

in return

she receives a necklace

two birthstones

one garnet, one amethyst

to show some kind of love

that echoes with dishonesty and tears

feeling unworthy and inferior

not comforted by an embrace

but by materialistic needs

I find myself questioning

I never wanted gifts or a card

I just wanted a genuine heart

a man that respects my space

sees my strength as beauty

not to be feared, but to be shared

honored every day of the year

instead I’m alone today

I acknowledge that it’s okay to hope

to want, to desire

somebody out there in the big wide world

who is looking for me

and wants to thread wildflowers

through my hair

dancing to every edge of the world

living through the rain and the pain and the hardships

someone who dares to grasp my imperfections

and embrace them in the palm of his hands

as i would in return

if given that chance

currently, I’m working on self-discovery

and I do believe

there is indeed a time in life

for everything

when I find my person who makes me happy

I’ll know

that being myself is enough

we won’t have to celebrate just one day

when we can experience all 365

together

facing every adventure and every emotion

from austerity to passion

he won’t be a prince

by society’s standards

because I’m not a princess

nor do I dare

to find a shoe that doesn’t fit

because he won’t need to save me

but we can live the fairytale dream

two lustrous souls

supporting each other’s ambitions

and highest hopes

healing all brokenness with tenderness

and I’ll keep searching for a genuine heart

until I find one
