Gratitude Overcomes Discouragement

Wed, 05/17/2017 - 20:26 -- Erikan

They say

Gratitude overcomes discouragment.

But I say,

It is very hard.

Very hard to find gratitude when your heart is ripped out.

When your sister is gone in an instant,

The life in her eyes dimmed down to nothing

In the instant of impact,

Two cars merging into one crumpled mess.

Very hard when your dad,

Your greatest protector and friend,

Is gone.

In his place, a weak, frail, shell of a man

Confused, disoriented, and a fragment of himself.

Years of battle between cancer and man,

slowly draining the years and life out of him.

But through all this, I can't help but be grateful.

Grateful I had a sister

To love,

And to love me.

Grateful my dad is still here,

Still fighting, still breathing,

Still alive.

Grateful I survive it all.

Grateful I am still breathing.

It is easy to be discouraged,

When the world a such a scary place.

But I realised that there is so much world to see,

And I am going to see it all.

I am going to parachute out of a plane,

Drive through Paris,

Boat in Venice, and bike along the Thames.

I am grateful that I can dance, and laugh, and live.

I am grateful for life.
