Growing

sarted from a seed planted on new year’s day

when the confetti was released, the couples kissed, and the champagne popped,

your adventure began

you grew like a sunflower straight up into the sky

unsure of your identity, you spread your leaves and continued to fly

reaching towards the bright starry sky

little by little, you began to bud into a small bead of beauty.

up you grew, as the months passed by so you were tall enough to grow

out of your wilted leaves and learned to get ahold of the truth

that lay fertile in the soil

your grip tightened on your roots and as you grew up and up,

your faith dug deeper into the ground

and along the way, as you budded into beauty, the sunflowers above and below you gave you shade from the dry sunlight and encouragement.

as they grew alongside you,

you were growing too,

budding as you finally set your petals free

and looked around to see your identity: beautiful sunflower, budding under the sun.

as you continued to grow into the New Year, knowing, you are bright, beautiful, knowing you are a flower with experience and wilted leaves to show you have grown out of your childlike ways, but a strong stem rooted deep within the cool soil

packed with the truth

now that you know who you are

now that you know where you’re headed

bloom upwards and don’t look down

up ahead, the rain smells sweeter and the clouds are softer

keep on growing
