Higher Ground
What is higher ground to the young black man?
Always struggling
not only to the the brute fist or physical assault of the chosen hand
but conformity to a blank society
discounting your hard work and dedication
often kissing the ground they walk on
because you were born with natural abilities
singing, running
you’re not smart
simply a cruel joke
often at the butt end,
begging and bartering
scraping and clawing
climbing
to reach higher ground
This poem is about:
Me
My family
My community
My country
Our world
