1.       LIGHT

In the light,

Sight is inevitable.

You can feel your feet stable on the concrete.

You can anticipate crossing those cracks in the sidewalk just a few yards ahead,

And you can study those who are tripping over them foolishly.

You laugh,

Even in the light they stumble,

But then you realize you’re no longer standing.

The light is still present,

But you see things a little differently as your back makes contact with the ground.

2.       DARK

In the dark,

Sight abandons you.

You must rely on new sensations.

You must learn.

You must close your eyes,

And accept that you are in the dark alongside those you once considered foolish.

What does that make you?

The answer is carried in the cracks of your skin.

You can see them if you bring your palms close enough to your eyes.

You tried to catch your fall,

Which is seen in the prideful blood seeping from your scrapes,

But will you pick yourself back up?

Immerse your open wounds in a basin of humility?

3.       HEALING

Hands submerged in purity,

Your mistakes float to the surface.

Not all of the dirt will come loose from your skin,

But as the pieces sway in the bloodstained water,

You feel relief in knowing that they are no longer a part of you.

In front of your eyes the wound begins to cauterize itself.

It is healing.

You dry your hands.

Leave them uncovered in the light.

There is still dust beneath the surface of your skin,

And there will soon be a discolored scar engraved into the palm of your hand,

A visible homage to the lessons learned.

In the light,

Sight is inevitable,

And now you see the humans that have learned to stand back up beside you.

The humans who have an awe-inspiring ability to restore themselves.

Physically.

Emotionally.

It is second nature,

And even you have recovered.
