How far we've come

How far we've come
So far we are told
from the days Emmett Till was killed cold
from the Little Rock Nine's fight for education
from the days when we were a separated nation
from the time when Rosa did the unthinkable
by sitting up front with a spirit unsinkable
from battles and beatings daily between races
simply due to the pigment of their faces
a trait of which no man can control
a factor in which nature and God rank most powerful
And so we are told today to look how far we've come
that our ideals once were nothing short of dumb
and of this fact no man can argue
history states that that much is true
but just because a man runs all day
doesn't mean his destination is not still far away.
