I Am Poem
I am an innocent sentenced for life.
I wonder if breakfast will come today.
I hear the chains clinkle as I lift my head.
I see the walls shine in the moon's luminescence.
I want to despair.
I am an innocent sentenced for life.
I pretend my stomach is full and my wounds are healed.
I feel the weight lifted from my wrists, relieved from the shackles.
I touch the blood sodden ground and realize it is not time.
I worry for the unspoken.
I cry in silence and rebel in laughter.
I am an innocent sentenced for life.
I understand I must be patient.
I say it is not time.
I dream tortue and live torture.
I try to treasure pain.
I hope to return these gifts.
I am a witness of the 1984 genocide.
