I have been awaken
Being naïve is a gift
It is as if you are asleep, with the peaceful sheep
But you are to be awakened from this
By the thunderstorms and the rainy days of reality,
That was me, you see
Sleeping
But awaken this year
For I never understood what was going on around me, with my friends and society until it actually hit me Home
The struggle that is in this world, but particularly to the black race
It's a battle we have not won although we have been fighting for what seems like 10,000 suns
We beg and we plead for equality, to be treated as one
But instead we are trampled with, thrown down, and they make our words undone
This past year alone, I have been awakened
To sites that have been covered
The mere fact that the existence of slavery in our country is still alive except it is called by a different name
That Jim Crow still rules are streets, or children and bring fear to our names
That our black population as a whole is crumbling and falling because of the blank white sheets
I have been awakened and no I will not go back to sleep
This needs to be changed, and not from the surface
It's like a patch, a garden, with weeds on top
We can pull the weeds, and have the surface clean
But we all know that the roots are still there
Digging deeper and deeper until we become despaired
So no I will not go back to sleep, no I will not forget what I have seen, I will pull these weeds, I will fight this fight, because there is no more black and white there will only be one, you and me and this fight.
It's a fight we all see a fight we always fight we must be there to stand and take flight
Because those words spoken long ago, I have seen the promised land, have not been able to be sung
We have not seen it yet but Let's me and you, see the stars and the moon, but let's see it together without the hate, let's be one just like how our great creator done
Let's all awaken and not be mistaken for there are lives that need to be saving
