I know what the caged bird felt
Now flying free from his oppression the warmth casuing his heart to melt
Flying through the skies wind beneath his wings
Now able to be happy where he sings

I know why the caged bird beat his wings
He flaps to be sure of what holds him down, nothing
The flap of his wings, the walk of his feet
No longer put to bed by a big white sheet

I know why the caged bird sang
To find a way to ease the pain
To hear his voice, make sure it was there
Now he may sing without care

I know why the caged bird is free
To live free like he and she
Free to laugh free to cry
Free to let his pain and shame die.
