Independence Day

Its been two days after fourth of July and i'm nervous

Pretty colors of red, white, and blue scheduled to fly up in the sky

such a pretty light show for Trayvon and Tamir

But I don't think Mr. Sterling meant that red stain on purpose

It's two days since we celebrated our independence

Our freedom

I ask again are we free, or are we just dumb enough to go along with this charade

You know FREEDOM is more than a song off Beyonce's Lemonade

Hold up

It's only been three days since that lovely day in July

But I saw on Facebook a young man died

his woman yelled, in shock on his side

while his child in the backseat cried

He never got the chance to say goodbye

Goddamn, It's been 3 whole days since the Fourth of July

72 hours

They said, they said Americas the land of the free and the land of opportunity

but why our little black boys don't get the opportunity to become men, or even the right to be tried, i mean it is our constitutional right, right?

Or is this institutionalized genocide

I thought America was a nation I could believe in, but God, I think they killin us on purpose, we're hurtin

But now

Its 4 days after July 4th

The sun is coming up

I don't have a son, but my little brother is close enough

And he don't know it yet

But he's gonna be a man someday

and I gotta let him

And he's gonna be black and unapologetically that

And July will come again next year

and maybe after that

And i'm tired, i've been reading too many hashtags

And we tired, we've been reading too many hashtags and opinions and justifications and social media activists and cnn updates and conspiracy theorists and...

I mean

Are YOU tired?

Cause my heart is heavy

and for the first time in my 17 short years

I feel more yesterdays than tomorrows in my future

and I matter. And I'm ready. I'm ready for my Independence day.
