Land That I Loved

America
A land I used to love calling  home
A land I loved and lived in with utter ignorance
Oblivious to the wreckage of it all
A land so free, yet guarded to the world
A melting pot, that keeps discarding the ingredients that make it great

What does free really mean when we are trapped behind laws, legislation, and men who all look the same
Deciding what they guarantee is a free life for them
Grooming through the public to find the parts of the minorities they feel are blemishes on this nation’s skin

A president who blindly leads
Talking, leading without educated thoughts
Making the nation more of a war zone, than a community of peace
Caging us into the bubble he feels is elite

Weakening the minorities, women, and lgbtq
Not because he should but because he can and wants to
He's not the first and he won't be the last
He's causing friction, protests, racism, and ignorance
Influencing hate
At a growing rate

Where is this land of liberty, happiness, and freedom
Did it disappear because we were all too oblivious to the problem at hand?
Or did we see the problem and ignore it as we do the problems facing immigration, healthcare, and education?
Ignoring has made us blind, as blind as our leader
Men, women, and children die everyday because of the issues plaguing our country
Instead of building a bridge to mend those problems
We've attacked the people trying to heal them

When did the country I loved become so distasteful?
Was it when I grew too old to be fooled by what my peers were feeding me?
No, it was when I realized that we were all being tricked into thinking we were perfect
All too perfect to be broken, bent, or frayed
We aren't perfect
We aren't the greatest of them all
We are failing in education
We are failing in inclusion
We are failing in immigration
We are failures

America isn't great nor can a switch in leadership change that
Making America great not only takes time
It takes effort, diversity, and change
We can't create a great future with the same old men running our government
Government is meant to be inclusive
And yet it is everything but that

America isn't free
But it can be
America isn't accepting
But it can be
America isn't great
But it can be
Not with isolation
Or repugnancy
Not with disrespect
Or alienating minorities
Not with eliminating funds for education and health
Or by building a wall to keep hispanics out

America is my home
Filled with a plethora of opportunities
It's time we change
And engage
Listen
Love
And build a better future
So the next generations aren't filled with ignorance
Hate
And refusal to change

I was raised to believe
That my country was free
Filled with liberty
And opportunity
But those were lies
Fed to to quench my thirst for the ideal
In reality our country
Is a beacon of hate
Filled with constant disagreement
At an alarming rate
This country isn't perfect
This country isn't great
It's a dying nation
Withering more and more each day
With time I hope we, as a nation, change
