Letter to a Dear Lover

Dear You,

Been a long time since we last spoke

Life hasn’t been good, last you told.

Heard it’s been hard. Steep, uphill slope.

I just want you to know.

It gets better, really, it does.

All that had been and now was

    Is long gone.

Meet my lover, I love her so

Just who is she? The girl next door.

I know, you think she hates you.

    Really, that’s not so true!

Turns out, she had liked you.

But that opportunity never went through, for you.

But it did for me.

I took a chance, and the Earth had curled.

I beat all the odds, against the world

You lost your chance, but mine had unfurled.

A lover gained, and a life previously stained,

Free from this forgotten satchel,

All gained because you did not know.

So how do you feel? Are you perhaps sad?

Don’t be! She’s the greatest lover I ever had!

Besides you. Myself, my true greatest fan.

Throughout it all, home, school, and work

We found a way to pull through, jerk.

So we’ll celebrate.

With a “Gimme Some!” and a hard handshake

We’ll revel in this life the world had made.

Still, we’d better respect each other.

It’s the only reason we got so far together.

To think I’d learn to love myself,

Put that one on your poetry shelf.

Sincerely,

Your(self)
