For my father:

You were young. So was she.

Yet only one of you were thinking of me.

You stopped over to tell me goodbye,

And I looked at her and asked, “why?”

Why is this stranger of a man,

Standing here holding my hand,

Asking me for a hug and a kiss?

In my confusion, I said, “who is this?”

I had no idea who you were.

My memories of you are not a blur,

They simply do not exist.

Do you know what you’ve missed?

As adults, we decided to meet.

I thought my life could finally be complete,

But out of nowhere, you disappeared.

I should have known. It’s what I’d feared.

You wrote to me with sincerest apologies.

Stop making excuses. Please.

I read your letter for three days, crying.

Do you mean what you said or are you lying?

I know I never replied,

Trust me when I say I tried.

It’s three years later and I just want to say

I forgive you, but please just go away.
