Oh, Gabrielle

Sitting on the sidelines of your friend's big game
Hoping she's prepared enough to avoid shame.
Watching her try to do it all;
Holding your breath, hoping she doesn't fall.
Taunting words from the other team
Slowly seep into her superstar dream.

You know your friend is hurting, it's hard for her to press on
Seeing past the mask of control she dons.
At the edge of your seat, biting your lip,
Wanting to scream out 'Please don't trip!
I love you too much to watch you stumble!'
But you don't call out, not even mumble.
This is her game, she needs to make the choices
You ignoring her 'fans' shouting advice at the tops of their voices.

As much as it pains you, you sit back and sigh
Knowing there's nothing you can do now, no matter how hard you may try.
Watching her misplaced trust and sometimes poor decisions;
Wincing; knowing there's no second chance for revisions.
The other players trampling over her heart
You can't do anything to stop their poisonous darts.

As the game winds down, hurting for your friend,
You know this is far from the end.
Hugging her tight, drying her tears that are spilling,
This crazy tournament called life is just beginning.
