One of A Kind

You are unique, yet you’re the same.

You’re the same, yet you are different.

Your differences are what make you unique

Alienation, socially, physically,

emotionally

None of it matters now

None of it does, yet all of it does.

Stand tall, stand true

Be an oak

With your branches reaching high towards the sky

And your roots, bound to the ground

Stand strong.

As the biting chill of winter passes

And the chaos of spring storms hit like fists

Believe I, who says you will persist

Because an Oak persists.

Oak.

A piece of wood

A pencil is a piece wood

Sure, there are millions of copies of them

But each is unique,

The way it’s held, the way it’s used

The power it holds, the power to create, the power to erase with a flick of a wrist.

A piece of wood as it exists.

If something so small and insignificant can do this

What can the oak itself do?

Oaks can stand alone from the great forests

Growing alone, filling the cracks

Yet they can be singled out.

Cut down by words sharper than an axe

But as many as times they go down

They grow again

Always skybound

May your skin be as rough and thick as its bark,

But may your imagination be as colorful as its autumn leaves.

May you grow to be as strong and unyielding

But may you be inspiration for others

Be fair, be wise

It should be natural with such great size

But remember, greatness is not ascribed

It's something you should achieve

And everyone has the ability

If you can only believe

No matter who you are or where you hail from

No matter your beliefs, your gender identity, personality, morals, Intelligence.

No matter the color of your skin.

No oak is greater than another,

Don’t let the haters win

no Oak is lesser than the other,

All are equal within

No one can control you

Be an oak

You are who you choose to be

Be one of a kind.

I wrote this poem months ago. I performed it for my Junior Exhibition in front of my class and most of the school. I wanted to create a message for my friends to convey that they are each an individual and unique in their own way, but like a family, are part of one well-oiled organic machine. I never really did poetry before, so I was nervous to show this to public eyes and ears.
