Participation Trophies to All

We were raised to believe that we could make a difference

That our every action had an impact

Guess what? It doesn’t.

We are not special rays of sunshine

Or a precious little snowflake

We are faceless blobs

You probably won’t make a difference

“Do what you love and the money will come”?

Who started spewing that bullshit?

Don’t me laugh

Loser living in Mommy’s attic

You don’t even deserve

the privacy of the basement

I look back through humanities history and see

That the difference makers

Were the motivated

Julius Caesar

Burning shit down

As he went about

Conquering Rome

Too bad he didn’t finish the job

We were raised to believe that:

Trying our best = Success

But participation does not equal change

You failed, accept and move on

The number of followers or friends you have

Does not mean that you are a leader

That you’re making a god-damned difference

Better try to keep this

Under 150 characters

Because god forbid

I write a paragraph

You think I give a damn about your lunch

About your cat licking a stuffed animal?

“You are the future”

“You’re going to tear down walls”

I do believe we would have to get off Instagram

In order to do that

The millennials, the next generation

Changing the face of the world

One Twitter war at a time

…Yeah, right.

This poem is about:
My country
Our world
