Red Was There

I was there
And so was red
It flashed so violently in the serene night sky
I could taste the burnt air on my tongue
Feel the screams vibrating through me
Their white robes swam through my dizzying vision
And I cried

I was there
And so was red
It blinded my eyes
The men in uniform shoved at us
While chaos made the air thick with frenzy
The water hit, like bullets at my skin
And I wept

I was there
And so was red
It reeked of revulsion
My feet ached of exhaustion
But I refused;
I refused to move to the back
And a single tear slid down my cheek

I was there
And so was red
Like lasers, looking with disgust at my colored flesh
But I did not move
I sat, silently, willingly, demanding to be fed
And they sat to my left, to my right demanding the same
And I wanted to cry

I was there
And so was red
It filled the air with warmth
Determination guiding us on our hushed paths
We walked, we tread in silence
To be equal, to have rights
And my eyes stung

I was there
And so was red
It seeped from his chest
So much red, so much
His life left
But I did not cry because his dream deserved so much more than tears
