Sankofa (Reach Back and Get It)

Spirit of the wind, carry me home

Spirit of the carry me

Spirit of the wind carry me home to myself

Sankofa!

Bird of the dark people

Spread your wings and bring my history back to me

Spread your wings and bring your history back to me

From afar and ancient land

The remembrance of your drums ring in my ear

Brrrr Ba! Brrrr Ba! Ba!

Brrrr Ba! Brrrr Ba! Ba!

Weaving women nestling their stories into the lives of their children

Weaving women nestling their stories into cloth made centuries strong by their wisdom

Weaving women nestling the courage to stand the journey for the sea

Sankofa!

Bring my memories back to me

The resignating rhythms carry in the beat of the waves

In the lash of the whip

In the clink of the chains

But you cannot drown the drum

You cannot drown the drum

You cannot silence the torment of the spirit because it rises and causes ill winds to blow

Ill winds blow perfumed by the stench of dying souls

We are dying and it’s like no one is even trying to hear it

So ill winds blow phylums

And ill winds blow tornados

And no one sees that even the earth rises up against us

Ill winds blow carry me home

To call for the ancient warriors

To call for the sons and daughters of thunder and fire

I call for the spirit of Hannibal to rise up and fight the mountains of injustice

I call for the spirit in Zynga, Warrior Queen, Princes

She free her country

She shook what her mother gave her

But she shook fists not hips

And when she needed to become a soldier she became one

Put a game face on and did something about what she could no longer stand

I know why the caged bird sings

He sings because he longs to be free

He beats his wings and a thousand men dream of liberty

And one breaks free

And breathes….and breathes…..and breathes

Ill winds blow, carry me home

Carry me home to myself
