Shards of Myself

Location

Sticks and stones may break my bones,

but words left scars that can't heal.

I was told I was of lower class,

to men I was supposed to kneel.

I've been screwed up my whole life.

since I don't fit in these boxes.

of identity and gender roles,

I can't pick these pre-made options.

And I was told that I felt wrong,

I didn't have a cross to bear.

That I brought on my own suffering,

because of my sex and the clothes I wear.

'Cause I'm meant to be seen,

and not to heard.

And when I wear a short skirt,

lines of consent are 'blurred.'

So this is me saying the truth

and to the generation that raised us-

It doesn't mean we aren't wounded,

just because you can't see the cuts.

So I can change the world

alter one tiny little thing,

I'm going to tell my daughter she's the Queen.

She doesn't need to bow to a King.
