There it was, the same bus I rode every day.
There he was, the proud driver, drunk with power over us—like a predator watching his pray.
There I was, sitting just behind the white borderline.
There he came the white man, stepping over the white line.

I could not move; I would not move.
I sat still and quietly refused to give up my seat.
I clearly heard the proud man insisting
But still, I would not move.

I knew my actions were not permitted but,
I knew my sense of justice was stronger.
“I knew when I made that decision,
I knew I had the strength of my ancestors with me.”

I did not know that on this Montgomery city bus,
A quest for freedom and equality would form.
I did not know, that after a long day at work,
I would change all of our lives.

I did know, however, that this bus was among the first ways;
The first ways “I realized, there was a black world and a white world.”
