A Silver Light Brings the Night

How dare you slip your silvery tail beneath

My velvet curtain? And you slink as though

One should know your deranged intent is certain!

Your frigid breath, in clouds of death, tumbles

Between the drapes. Soon, you escape your

Poisonous place, and stand before me, human.

Lo! Human! Indeed, you seem, yet fickle

As one from a distant dream. You slither your way

To my bedside, and lean in closer to confide…

“Oh, my child, you wander so,” you whisper

To me, two times, low. Though, despite sudden

Trepidation, I felt a somewhat obligation…

“Away from me! Be on thy way! I’ll wander

The morrow as I’ve wandered today. My

Words will grow bitter the longer you stay.”

You flash me a look of wild amusement, then

Utter in a voice of subtle illusion “All

Words taste better when spoken in the dark.”

“Bah, curse this bloody mark! Wish I’d never found that

ring in the park! From whence you came, you shall

Return! And I’ll never receive what I have earned!”

You smile a sinister smile indeed! And I am

Hard-pressed to impede the You that really

Isn’t Me. You are persistent, I must say

And I’d rather not have it that way. Your

Kiss is comprised of many lips, and reddens

My blue fingertips. “I want you gone---Be gone, I say!”

“Do you truly mean what you say?” Your slithering

Voice leaves my own weak. I say with helplessness and meek,

“In the light, I am strong. In the dark, I am weak.

Are my words my own, or are they chosen for me?”

You sigh a sigh of heavy burden and look me in the eye.

“Oh, my child, you wander so. And now, it’s time to...”
