Smiling Through Change

High school is tough

Like an airplane rising into the air

The pressure increases

To be someone you’re not

Changing yourself to fit their mold

Or for the sake of being different and standing out

In this time when inner conflict is so great

Why surround yourself with more

Find people who bring you up

Who help you grab your dreams

And push away the doubts and fears

Negativity is infectious

But a smile more so

One small act of kindness

Can melt a person’s icy heart

What does one truly gain from frowning

Just some down-trodden lines that mar your face

Telling your story of self-despair

How you found no joy and have none to offer

Not a welcoming sight

What I’ve learned is to live by kindness

To spread love

Because that’s what people need

You never know what kind of chain reaction you can start

By just choosing to see the glass half full

How your one action can help another

It’s easy to remember the hard times

To find fault in others

Letting your anger fester and grow

Life in general may not be easy

But it’s a heck of a lot better

If you find something

Or someone

To smile about
