Sojourner Truth

Isabella Baumfree, known as Sojourner Truth
Born in 1797 in Ulster County, New York
She was one of 13 children
Born to Elizabeth and James
The sad truth to her story is that she was born a slave.

She was sold several times and married a made named Thomas
Together they had 5 kids and marriage was kept a promise
Then one day in 1827, she ran away with her youngest child
Her life soon became mild.

She experienced a religious conversion, preachers in a booth
Then she moved on to New York and changed her name to Sojourner Truth
In the late 1840s she became an abolitionist
All throughout this time she remained a Methodist

In 1850 women’s suffrage became her plea
Her most famous speech was “Aint I a Woman” two years before 1853
She moved again to Michigan and joined another religious commute
No longer a Methodist she became Seventh Day Adventists

During the Civil War she raised food and clothes
The black soldiers that she gave them to gave her praise and woes
She met Abraham Lincoln at the White House in 1864
She pressed for him to try to bring the blacks home from war

After the Civil War she tried to get jobs for the blacks
But no one would allow that, they wouldn’t even donate some slacks
She was active in the Civil Rights Movement until her Grandsons death in 1875
She then returned to Michigan until the day she died.

Thank you Sojourner for the things you’ve done
One day when God comes back he’ll praise you with his only son
