The Songs of U.S.
Location
In America today, people live for tomorrow.
The present is a gift that is accepted with sorrow.
Living the “dream” just to move along,
While humming the tune of the American song.
Is this the message their ancestors sent?
To live in a world where no American is content.
Always freedom’s prisoner; never America’s patriot;
Fighting for their rights in an ole fashion riot.
Men still deny and abridge equality at the voting booth.
Politics a tool to redefine the lie and speak it as truth.
A history distorted and retold in error; yet proudly left behind,
Through lyrics of a frenzied freedom-prisoner’s mind.
Who set the goals of the American Dream?
Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness their fathers deem.
Calling out the names of “sister” and “brother”
Black or white, but the red, white, and blue give them all color.
Did this America start in ’64?
Have we forgotten what this act is for?
Do you hear the song the Americans sing?
Is it the song of the man who said, “Let freedom ring?”
What do words or actions mean to “U.S.”?
What did they mean for the woman on a bus?
I am the American. Yes, that’s me,
And my American song begins with “We.”
We, the new generation, have much to learn.
We, the people, have battles to fight; respect to earn.
The future must be met with compassion and care.
With time and patience we’ll have a song to share.
We must preserve our bridge to the past.
It is the only way our America will last.
