Sorry you were the one

It doesn't matter if you’re black or you’re white,
You shouldn't have to beg for your rights or put up a fight.
The color of your skin, the pigment within,
Doesn't show who is supposed to win.

But when it comes to the truth,
You were beat down in your youth.
The pain is a sharp blade,
The memories will never fade.

Reoccurring nightmares will haunt you,
The bruises on your heart are dark blue.
The past cannot be undone,
Sorry you were the one in a war without a gun.

But you refuse to stop,
Until you get to the top,
Because that’s where we all belong,
That’s what God meant all along.

Some just didn't see it,
They refused to believe it,
But you kept your faith and your pride
You didn't push your feelings aside.

But we have moved forward,
There is something new we are going towards.
That’s called progress,
Sorry you were the one to clean up the mess.

I really like the message about progress at the end of the poem. We are moving towards equality for all, and the only way we will reach it is if we all try to work towards making progress. Sad to say, but there will never be equality. There will always be atleast one ignorant person left, its not moving towards equality its moving away from those who arent willing to treat you equal.
