It must pass this day, this day it must
we have fought as a nation; in God we Trust
This day long awaited through trial and scorn
it must pass this day, a new country be born

A people has suffered o'er hundreds of years
through blood and through pain, through sweat and through tears
Together they plead, Lord mercy, please mercy
but their cries fall only on rising controversy

Skin beaten raw, separated and torn
how can our people watch as they mourn
Their people forgotten in this world so lost
it's time for a change, matters not what the cost

An ignorant society only pleasure in mind
is now called upon to leave all behind
We were meant for a much greater purpose than this
we must come together, we must climb out the abyss

Finally now we stand chance 'gainst this vice
we cannot back down, that will not suffice
The people have gathered, this night of all nights
to speak up or back down; to save human rights

Anxious I sit, for I cannot cast
a vote for the freedom from their horrible past
I wait but no sign, dear God hear my prayer
let them pass this amendment, if not I shan't bear
the work of my office my failure e'vr at hand
the anguish of my people in this blessed land

I hear echoes of footsteps; closer they come
my eyes see white; the sound a distant hum
"Mr. President sir," slowly I stand
"They have passed the amendment, they are free from this land."

A teardrop forms and slides down my face
"Thank you God for this chance, thank you God for this grace!"
And then comes a sound at first soft, then loud
I rush to the window and greet the vast crowd

Tolling the bells ring out o'er the land
clashing and clanging; the people all stand
They shout with triumph, proclaim their victory
this is the sound of freedom, the sound of liberty
