Strength

He clutches our hands desperately,

begging us not to leave him.

With bloodshot eyes and gritting teeth

I pry his weakened veined hands off of me.

Looking down I watch his eyes,

his eyes that we once a deep dark brown

are now filled with tears.

There are no words for this pain!

Silently praying for strength,

for courage to leave him in his hospital bed,

knowing if we don't leave him now,

he will never sleep.

The man once as strong as a bulldozer,

crys and begs us to stay.

His heart monitor now rapidly beeping

the deeply deafening sound of his sorrows.

Slowly we retreat to the door,

trying to hold back our tears,

knowing when they finally come

they will never stop.
