I know that we looked different
I knew it all along
But treating us this badly
Seems like it should be wrong

You say separate but equal
We all know that’s a joke
It never worked that nicely
I think you all misspoke

We cannot use your bathrooms
But ours are rarely clean
You cannot give a reason
For treating us this mean

You can try to suppress us
But we won’t give up hope
We will rise up against you
We all refuse to cope

This movement gains momentum
It’s all over the news
These people are inspiring
You’ll have to see our views

It starts off fairly simple
She won’t give up her seat
This gives us motivation
Now we cannot retreat

There are nine daring students
That brave an all-white school
They get an education
But their treated so cruel

Dr. King once had a dream
Who can forget his speech?
It was so awe inspiring
To listen to him preach

I wonder what he’d think
If he saw us today
I hope he would be proud
We’ve come such a long way
We will always be working
For perfect unity
A world with our violence
Is what we hope to see
