Then and Now

Everything can change so quickly.
With one word, look, or thought.
I thought I knew you and then you surprised me.
My best friend became a stranger.
A stranger became my best friend.
Looking back, though, it didn’t happen so quickly.
Over time, my feelings faded away.
Those happy memories became less clear.
I never saw the end coming.
It crept up on me until it swallowed me whole.
How could such a simple choice have entirely changed my life?
Maybe I could’ve changed the outcome.
Maybe I shouldn’t have made that stranger my best friend.
How could I have known what would happen?
Looking back, I have so much insight.
I can point out my mistakes and wish I would’ve done things differently.
Now that I know what I want,
I wish I could go back and make changes.
The past and present, no matter how distant, are so very different.
