Too Well

Your eyes tell a story
That plays on your lips
You’ve got much to say and yet you resist
Your mind is a novel
Words etched on your soul
But something has made you less than whole
And I know this
Because I know you
Too well

Your past glows like embers
In the ash on your face
You walk like someone in need of embrace
A thousand reasons behind
Your halfhearted sigh
Half hoping, half dreading someone will ask why
And I know this
Because I know you
Too well

Your words are rehearsed
Your smile made of clay
You pinch it and mold it and force it to stay
It’s a friendly façade
You joke, and you laugh
To cover a cry that could break you in half
And I know this
Because I know you
Too well

Ugly truths tucked away
Masked with comfortable lies
You fool quite a few with your cunning disguise
But underneath silent skin
Your spirit screams
Because you are so much more than you seem
And I know this
Because you
Are like me.
