Unspoken

Unspoken

There’s things they don’t tell you,

Things often left unsaid,

It’s hard to speak up when you’ve been quiet for so long,

It’s hard to change what has been there from the start.

They tell you about the lovers,

They tell you about the abusers and the users,

They don’t tell you about the sneaky ones,

They don’t tell you about your friends,

They don’t tell you how toxic a friend can be.

They start small,

They degrade your intelligence by inflating their own,

They talk about themselves and never once ask about you,

They tell you that you matter but constantly show you why you don’t,

They choose the ones who hurt them,

They don’t even realize how hurtful this is,

They don’t care how hurtful this is,

You’re too sensitive,

You’re overreacting,

You’re dumb,

You’re fat,

You’re ugly,

You will never amount to anything,

These would all be too obvious,

But sometimes the obvious is what’s hard to break down,

Breaking down walls built from sticks and stones is not a lesson they taught us.

Because I love you I let you speak down to me,

Because I love you I said the same things to myself that you said to me,

Because I love you I let you break me,

Because I love you, I let you win.

Because I love me I took back my voice,

Because I love me I took back my respect,

Because I love me I learned how to stop loving you,

Because I love me, I am whole.
