What Was

I am the lift in the wind, and the flame in the fire

I am the shift in the earth, and the hope you aquire

I am the drops in the rain, and the mud in the grass

I am the spirit in a lamb and the joy you run past

I am freedom and awe, a seed of pride sown

I am the thoughts that comfort you when you are alone

I am the brown in the bark and the white in the snow

I am the color in the fall and the river that flows

I am the blue in the ocean and the spring in your step

I am the love that you cherish and the faith that you kept

I am the peak of a mountain and the leaves of a tree

I am the spark in your eyes when you think of me

There’s no one else that I desire

There’s nothing else that I require

You’re my food, my water, my air to breath

Together forever - a child is conceived.

In a perfect moment suddenly, everything goes wrong.

Your heart is blackened - a funeral song

There is nothing for us, nothing but grief.

Now dead is the child that we had conceived

Dead. Is the love we felt at first sight.

Alive. Is the darkness - drowning the light.

Alive. Are the screams, the screams in the dark

Dead is the joy - and everything that was ours.

You blame me, I know, for what happened that night

A time our fires of hatred ignite

And upon your part, played so well,

a thousand hopes shattered, and a little girl fell.

Fears, they haunt you, there's blood on your hands

There’s nowhere to run - the memory stands.

You - are the one that opened that door.

You - are the one that started this war

For you are the one who left as she grew

As fires of ice consumed what you knew

And now you blame me

But you’re blinded from the truth

Your eyes forced to see

That you took her youth.

Eyes of gold and fists of steel

Like a cold hearted serpent you no longer feel

You shut me out, of your life, your heart

Second by second we grow further apart.

Hour by hour, minute by minute

Energy and goodness - fast to finish

Week by week - year by year

You conceal yourself, you’re consumed by fear.

Once a proud eagle - now cowering in a corner

Destroyed, no escape, from visions of horror.

Now, the only thing that denies you your peace

Was the one think that you used to seek

And now you come with a knotted rope

And you finally destroy - your very last hope.
