The ride down to Canal takes a really long time
Especially when you swipe the card and ride the 6 line.
Stop after stop
Enter and Exit
Ages range from ancient to infant
Strollers
Bikes
And bags
Crowded, empty, all of that.
Tourists get off at 42nd street
They have maps and guide books and places to be.
The mother of five rambunctious childs rounds up the troops
And exits single file.
Homeless me and women sleep
Hooded strangers lurk and creep.
The wall street suits are always checking their watches
And the headphone music listeners are unconscious.
When it's your stop you stand to exit,
Walk through,
And silently say goodbye to the people you never knew.
