Afraid of Yourself

Have you ever feared your own mind?

Because I have, scared of what I’d find.

What demons and ghosts lay in the corner?

And If I looked, would it fill me with horror?

Have you ever feared your own heart?

Because I have, as it tore itself apart.

Rage and sorrow were like a sharp knife.

Pain filled my entire being with strife.

Have you ever feared your own breath?

Because I have, each gasp felt like death.

So angry when my body forced life in.

Asking myself when peace would begin.

Have you ever feared your own hands?

Because I have, shocked at what it demands.

They’re shaking holding the steel razor.

Pressed lightly against skin like a traitor.

Have you ever feared yourself?

Because I have.

It took so long to face the mirror.

So long before I saw myself clearer.

So long before I wasn’t afraid.

So long before I wasn’t betrayed.

With help, I destroyed my soul.

Rebuilt it slowly to make it whole.

I built happiness block by block.

Moved my feet until I walked.

Have you ever feared yourself?

Because I have, and I overcame.

So I believe you can do the same.
