All Body, No Character

If I could change one thing

I would be how society looks at women

Why are we considered fragile, lithe

emotionally unstable

When we give birth

to the nation's brightest, strongest and excellent

Why are women considered frail

when the strongest characters we know

are our mothers, aunts, daughters, sisters, and friends

if you do not believe me

listen, watch, and discover

in American high schools

a young girl, questioning femininity, wearing a skirt

is frowned upon

while a young boy flaunts a sexist T-shirt

and herald as a comedian

In Congress, women are still seen as objects

Still the fight for body autonomy continues

with decisions at the feet of men

Why are rape victims still mocked and the vicious cycle of victim shaming

is constantly happening

Society does not elevate our girls

instead it tells girls to compete with each other

and do what she can to please others

most importantly, a future husband.

We need to elevate our girls

change society's mindset that girls are more than fairy princesses

and that we deserve more than 77 measly cents

we deserve the full dollar

each women's rights movement always flowed in waves

but this time, we need to make an ocean.
