To America

My Yah Yah came from China

He sailed across the sea

He wanted to come to America to live in the land of

the free

When he arrived in America they would not

Let him in

So he changed his name from Fong to Tong to

Become a citizen

A citizen he would not be

Until one fateful day

He was drafted for the war

And they sent him far away

He went to basic training for ninety days or so

To become a good soldier

Would he survive? He did not know

When training time was over

His assignment would be made

He would fight for his new country

A citizen he became

He was so very happy, he was so very proud

He served his time in World War II

Then he was homeward bound

To San Francisco he did come

He met his wife and then

He had a little family and settled in Oakland

A new life to begin.

The End

I think my Yah Yah was very brave

because he left his native country to start a new life.

He found that life in the United States presented

many challenges, but he did not give up.
