America the Whore

"America the Great!"

They shout to the crowds

"America the Great!" they scream.

I watch on and wonder if

America is as great as she seems.

"America the Great!"

I look on and see riches and fame:

The "American Dream" fulfilled,

As everyone works harder and longer

'Til their drained of life and will.

"America the Great!"

I walk past poverty and crime:

The American shame silenced,

Everyone knows, no one speaks

Too busy to notice the sirens.

"America the Great!"

Everything is right, all is good,

Nothing is sacred, nothing is holy

Where are the teachers of good?

They've all been martyred on duty.

"America the Great!"

I wish I could join,

But there's so much I can no longer ignore:

Arrogance and ignorance rule with pride

While America lays down like a good whore.

"America the Great!"

Maybe she was, maybe she will be

It is a lie we tell as we watch unmoving

Our innocence melting away

All the while her destruction starts looming.

"America the Great!"

They shout to the crowds

"America the Great!" they scream.

I watch on and wonder maybe

America is not as great as she seems.
