And Then They Came for Me

The class started with the line

"First they came for the Jews"

And eyes refused to meet mine

"First they came for the Jews"

Bubbles across my desk

As I try to erase the swastika from my desk...again

"First the came for the Jews"

As babies in cribs and toddlers

Learning the Torah with rain on their faces

Stood outside our community centers

"First they came for the Jews"

I remember as I receive a phone call

from a boy, I saw become a man at the altar of the Torah

"When will it end?" he shakes

"First they came for the Jews"

And when I said nothing

Then they came for me

We are on step one

What will you do

When they reach step two?
