Another Day, Another Night

Location

Another day, another night

just like the one before

but for me, Kurembra, my limbs are still sore

I want to cry with every passing day and I want my family

so my siblings and my daughter could go out and play

my birthday just passed and I’m 27 now

just going off to college with the money

that was raised for me

only 18 years ago I was screaming, “how?”

how could someone have so much hatred

just to go out and kill?

how could someone have so much rage

to be able to let every emotion inside spill?

spill into the streets of my poor poor town

and kill everyone with the Tutsis crown.

but now I ask, “why?”

I’m sure I’ll never know.

Another day, another night

just like the one before

but for me, Sarah, my heart is still sore

I want to cry with each passing day, I want my best friend

so we can go out and play

my birthday just passed and I’m just 9 now

going off to school again

in some other town somehow

but 6 months ago I was screaming, “how?”

how could someone have so much hatred

to just go out and kill?

how could someone have so much rage,

to just let every emotion spill?

spill into the hallways of my poor poor school

and kill the people I thought were so cool?

but now I ask “why?”

And the answer to that

I’m sure I’ll never know.
