An Appalachian Highway

An Appalachian Highway

Cars pass by, bringing with them

brief glimpses into other lives.

The revving motors roaring

through the silent rolling hills.

The tiny vehicles, mere ants

to the high sheer rock cliffs

Rancid smells of exhaust fumes

mix contradictorily with country farms.

The grey and black pavement

meets in grotesque beauty with grass.

Grey and green,

urban and country,

new and old.

The question must be asked:

Which deserves its rightful place?
